Established in 1974, Big Sandy Health Care, Inc. (BSHC) is a private, non-profit corporation. BSHC began with two primary care centers: Hope Family Medical Center (formerly Magoffin County Clinic) in Salyersville, KY and Eula Hall Health Center (formerly Mud Creek Clinic) in Grethel (Floyd County), KY. Initially housed in a trailer and supported financially by the United Mine Workers Union, Mud Creek Clinic was located on the remote Tinker Fork of rural Floyd County. After a fire destroyed the original clinic in 1982, Mrs. Eula Hall, the clinic’s founder, led fundraising efforts for the construction of a new clinic at its present location in Grethel. With locally raised money and funding assistance from the Appalachian Regional Commission, Mud Creek Clinic reopened its doors in 1984. Mud Creek Clinic has been renamed “Eula Hall Health Center” in honor of its founder.

In 1993, a group of Pike County residents formed a non-profit organization called Cumberland Valley Medical Clinic and secured a lease on property owned by Pike County and located on Douglas Parkway. The group later changed the corporation’s name to Shelby Valley Medical Clinic and, in 1994, opened the Shelby Valley Clinic facility in its present location in rural Pike County, Kentucky. Later that year, Big Sandy Health Care and Shelby Valley Medical Clinic entered into an agreement for BSHC to assume operational responsibility of Shelby Valley Clinic.

Big Sandy Health Care established Physicians for Women & Families in Auxier (Floyd County), KY in 2001. This health center offers a wide array of women’s health care services, including pregnancy care, childbirth education, 4-D ultrasound and gynecological services, as well as primary health care for all family members.

BSHC established Martin County Community Health Center in June 2009. Martin County Community Health Center is located at the intersection of Route 3 and Highway 645 in Inez, Kentucky.

BSHC provides a wide array of primary health care, general medical, obstetrics and gynecological, dental and behavioral health services at its community health center sites. In addition, BSHC provides medical services in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as dental services in school and Head Start center settings. BSHC offers on-site laboratory, diagnostic x-ray and pharmacy services.

Licensed as primary care centers by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, all BSHC sites have electronic medical records and state-of-the-art equipment. BSHC employees more than 100 individuals, including a well-qualified clinical team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, dentists and behavioral health providers. BSHC has received national recognition for the care of patients with chronic illnesses, in particular, diabetes and high blood pressure. BSHC’s pharmacies participate in a federal program designed to provide low-cost prescriptions to qualifying patients. We also have a sliding-fee scale program for eligible patients.
